March is International Women’s Month and there’s is no better time to support, celebrate and appreciate the women in your life in Detroit, while raising money to support our local domestic violence organizations in Metro Detroit.

The Vagina Monologues introduces a wildly divergent gathering of female voices written by Obie Award winning author, Eve Ensler.

“Ensler breaks taboos by talking, talking and talking some more—stripping fear and shame from what she celebrates here. It makes for quite a party. Funny, outrageous, emotionally affecting, and occasionally angry…The Vagina Monologues confront words to demystify and disarm them. In so doing, Ensler disarms the audience too.”
– Associated Press

Every year V-Day invites activists in colleges, communities, high schools, or youth groups around the world to present select benefit events during and leading up to V-Season (February 1–April 30). The purpose of these events is to raise awareness about violence against women and girls as well as raise money (100% of the proceeds must be donated) for local beneficiaries that are working to end violence. No theater or producing experience is necessary and no royalty fees are charged.

At The International Institute (111 E. Kirby btwn John R & Woodward) in Detroit, Shawn P Entertainment Presents Vagina Monologues 2013 Sunday, March 24, 2013.

When you purchase a ticket in advance for $15 Dollar ticket from Motown Writers Network (below), $5 dollars goes specifically to support our highlighted domestic violence organization SAFE, while the rest of the proceeds go to help other domestic violence organizations around Metro Detroit.

ABOUT S.A.F.E.

Kalyn Risker, Founder and Executive Director of Sisters Acquiring Financial Empowerment (SAFE) is a survivor of domestic violence. In 1998, she was beaten until her eye socket required reconstructive surgery. Kalyn Risker immediately left the situation with her four-year-old daughter, having only a part-time job and needing additional income and health benefits. Prior to her doctor releasing her back to work, she received a full-time position at a payroll company and began building her career. While working full-time, Ms. Risker obtained a Bachelors Business Administration in Human Resource Management. As a Human Resource Manager, she received job applications from women who were missing many of the necessary components to seek employment. Kalyn Risker also supervised many employees that lacked adequate resumes for successful career advancement. Additionally, she met with several workers seeking her department to explain reductions in their productivity, request time off work and other resources to help deal with abuse in their homes. As stated by Kalyn Risker “My experience as a survivor of domestic violence and as a Human Resource Executive led to the idea for SAFE. Although I show no readily visible signs of scarring, I use my personal victory over circumstances to help inspire others into action”.

Sisters Acquiring Financial Empowerment (SAFE) has an accomplished background of actively providing services to survivors of domestic violence in the Southeastern Michigan community since its first Executive Board meeting held May 11, 2006. SAFE has expanded its impact to the community by enlisting volunteers who are experts in the area of the training delivered. SAFE is a part of several anti-violence initiatives within Southeastern Michigan including, Wayne County Council Against Family Violence and Transformation Detroit. SAFE has also participated in rallies and community outreach initiatives to raise the awareness of domestic violence in the Southeastern Michigan community. Sisters Acquiring Financial Empowerment was granted its 501 (c) (3) nonprofit status effective August 8, 2006.

Meet @CharlieCurve, #MotownLit’s Keynote Lunch Speaker! Get yr tickets now!

Note from Essence of Motown Literary Conference Chairperson, Sylvia Hubbard:

You ever get to a point in life where you think you’ve reached the ceiling and can’t go any farther. You think that you’ve accomplished enough and those other things you want to accomplish you aren’t as passionate about anymore because you feel you’ve used up enough energy trying to get to your other goals.

I think when I first met “Charlie Curve” I was at that point in my life. I was a good author, I had a great fan base and MWN was just going. Everything was chugging along a little at a time and I was becoming … complacent.

I got invited to an event by a friend about four years ago and I wasn’t really interested in going, but for some reason I was like Jonah and the whale. No matter how far I ran, that whale kept coming to drag me back where I needed to be.

At this event was this guy and he turned on a light switch inside of me.

The first time I heard Charlie Wollborg aka @CharlieCurve, I couldn’t help but smile and know that things can get better. Not just for myself, but my world around me. I’ve never wanted to really make an effort to introduce myself to someone. I’m a writer and I’m shy, but for some reason I just told myself Charlie had to know my name.

Since meeting him, he’s truly made an impact in my life and has helped me target myself, re-energize my work and organization and made me grow in the direction I need to go.

He’s one of those people placed on Earth that you just have to meet!

Meet Charlie Wollborg

Charlie is a purveyor of attention. He helps growing brands stand out from the clutter.

He opened the doors at Curve Detroit Marketing Strategy & Creative Design after being thrown out of several well respected ad agencies. As a marketing strategist and creative director, he has delivered blue sky ideas and bottom line results for blue chip national clients and budding local brands.

When he’s not building brands, you’ll find Charlie inspiring, educating and entertaining business audiences with his lively keynote presentations on social media, branding, marketing and motivation. He helps smart companies stay on top of what’s new, what’s now and what’s next in the world of marketing and technology. He’s earned applause and laughter at several Ignite events and recently took the second place prize at the PowerPoint Karaoke World Finals.

Along with a few cool friends, Charlie helped bring the acclaimed TED conference to Michigan in the form of TEDxDetroit. He also carves out a little time for Motor City Connect, a Detroit-based social network and professional development organization he helped create.

Got Books? Help Strengthen Detroit’s Literary Community! #michlit #mwn #motownlit

Starting from now to November 10th, it will be my mission  to try to collect 50, 000 books for the Metro Detroit Literary Community.

I know the impact of books in a home for a child and I want to give every home that doesn’t have books in Detroit some.

This sounds like an interesting challenge and I’m asking everyone to help me.

Why?

I love books. My mother put that love in my heart way before I came into this earth and I’m blessed to have passed this love to my children.

Now I want to share my love with everyone out there who struggles to make a choice to buy a book or pay a bill in Detroit. I don’t want to see anyone have to make that choice.

Plus statistics states even one book in a household increases the chances of a child graduating from high school.*

If you would like to drop your book off in person, subscribe to this site (see sidebar) and when you see I’m having an event, come and bring your books to donate (while picking up a couple of copies of mine – although that’s not a requirement).

If you aren’t in Detroit and would like to send books, please ship them to:

Detroit Impact Community Center

Attn: MWN Book Drive

9930 Greenfield, Detroit, Michigan 48227

You can also drop off from 9am to 6pm

WHERE DOES ALL THIS GO AND WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM YOUR DONATION?

I know 50,000 books is a lot of books, but there is a meaning to my madness. These are the organizations that will benefit from your donation:

Pro-Literacy of Detroit – http://www.proliteracydetroit.org

During December, this organization has a graduation program for their adult readers who have successfully completed tutoring. Your book donations will go towards gifting them books they may take home as their reward to continue and strengthening their new-found reading skills.

The Detroit Impact Center –http://www.detroitimpactcenters.org/main.htm

Geared toward the youth in the Metro Detroit Community, The Detroit Impact Center provides literary services, programs and more. The library inside the center is under serviced and in desperate need of current books geared toward ages between tween and teen. I would love to give them what they need to encourage young adults to read more and provide Mr. Colbert, the director, the power to give these kids the gift of reading.

Also I’ve been approached by the following organizations to help them provide books for their participants.

The Fountain of Life COGIC – GED program for text books and educational books

My Sisters Keeper – Single Family Non-profit to gift single parents and their children with books for the holidays.

Help me help them!! I want to be the Oprah of book giving! The Santa Claus of the Literary Community. (I could go on with these metaphors, but they’d just get really corny. )

We hope to soon work with Kickstarter, so we can have a monetary donation system in place, but if you would like to contribute still, you can PayPal your donation to motownwriters@yahoo.com.

For all monetary donations, we plan to buy gift certificates from John King Books.  (http://www.rarebooklink.com/cgi-bin/kingbooks/index.html)

Established in 1965, recently, we found out that two of their stores were in danger or closing. In my creative way to shed light upon a low foot traffic situation to the stores,  I’ve decided that proceeds earned from donations will go to buy gift certificates from John K. King Bookstore and donated to the groups above so they can also make selections.

Also, this will ensure your donations will go right back into the literary community of Metro Detroit!

I do hope you help me meet my goal. I’m so excited about my mission and I’m going to blog all about it here at my website with the category tag 100,000.

Spread the word! Send the message! Shout it from the rooftop: There’s a crazy book lady in Detroit who needs books! (I don’t mind the crazy part, because even my mother said I’m a good crazy.)

I thank you in advance for your help to my literary endeavors!

*I couldn’t remember where that statistic came from before I blogged this, but it was in the last couple of months that I read it.

As the list of sponsors grow, I’m going to be posting sponsors to this post. If you’d like to know when I make updates to this particular post, please add a great comment and subscribe to comment updates.

I’d also like to know what efforts you are doing to strengthen your literary community and if you have creative ideas to help me encourage my own literary community to donate more.

I plan to do more face to fact book drop off events for the next couple of months. If you would love to help me plan these, please do not hesitate to contact me at my email:  .

If you are media interested in requesting an interview about our literary cause, please contact Andrea Daniels of ANDCommunications at: 313.468.2459.

ARTICLE: Writing a Book: How Long Does It Take? via Irene Watson @bloggingauthors #mwn

12 hours in 90s

Image by Astro Guy via Flickr

Expert Author Irene Watson

As an author, one of the questions I am most frequently asked is, “How long did it take you to write your book?” It’s really a very vague question and not one that is easy to answer. I could say six months or a year, but I didn’t spend a year working on it full-time in terms of forty hours a week, fifty-two weeks a year. A better answer would be in terms of hours, but I didn’t keep track of them. An often quoted study by the Brenner Information Group says that it takes 475 hours to write a fiction book and 725 to write a nonfiction book. That’s a very general statement and I am skeptical about whatever process was used to come up with those numbers since I doubt any writer keeps reliable records on the hours he or she spends writing. But those numbers are sufficient to make it clear that writing a book requires a huge time commitment.

It’s possible you could figure out how many words you can write in an hour and then figure out based on your word count how many hours it took you to write the book, but it just isn’t that scientific of a process. Sure, maybe I can type fifty words a minute so that’s 3,000 words an hour and if my book is 50,000 words long, that means it must have taken me about 16.66 hours to write, but the truth is no one could write 3,000 words in an hour consistently. No matter how fast you type, it’s hard to get the words on the page that easily, and when you had those 50,000 words, you’d only have the rough draft done-in what would be little more than two full working days. Even so, if anyone can write a 50,000 word book in two days, I’d sure like to meet that person and learn his or her secret.

I doubt anyone can really keep track of how long it takes to write a book because there is so much more to account for. You have to come up with the ideas-maybe just the beginning or end scene, and then fill in everything in the middle. That takes a lot of thought. It might take numerous walks while you play with ideas, it might take drawing diagrams or characters’ faces on paper, it might take sleepless nights when you can’t stop thinking about the characters, it might take hours outlining and re-outlining your book. It might take creating a five-step formula, or learning a process so you can write about it accurately. It could take hours of research and fact checking, and then there are all the hours of revision. A really good author might have moments of inspiration where he can write several thousand words in a sitting and produce quality work, but most writers are more like Hemingway, who said that for every good page he wrote, he wrote ninety-nine bad pages. In other words, it takes time, and it takes a willingness to be persistent.

People often think, “I’ll take a vacation and write my book in those two weeks I’m off,” or “This summer when I’m not teaching, I’ll write my book,” or “After I retire, then I’ll have lots of time to write.” But truthfully, having all that time to write can be scary and self-defeating. As humans, we like to be distracted continually. Few of us can work for more than a few hours at something without needing a break. If you tell yourself you’re going to spend all day Sunday working on your book, chances are your day will go something like this: 8 a.m. you tell yourself you have all day so you read the morning paper, and then you have to make breakfast, and then it’s 10 a.m. and you think you should get some exercise so you go for a walk. At 11 a.m. you finally sit down to write, but you feel the words aren’t flowing out easily and your character doesn’t do what you want, and then noon comes and you decide to have a snack, and then you think, what the heck, the football game is on at 1 o’clock and I’ll still have eight hours to write after it ends, but then there’s supper, or maybe a good movie to watch in the evening….You see where I’m going with this.

The problem is that too much time is daunting. So is setting an unrealistic goal such as “I’ll have the book done in one month, or three months.”

When people complain to me about not having time to write or feeling overwhelmed with the task, I tell them, “All you have to do is write one page a day and you’ll have a book done in a year.” And that’s a generous timeframe for accomplishing the task since a 365 page book is longer than most want to write, but that allows for days when you don’t get the writing done or you get stuck. If you write 200 pages in that time, you will have done well.

Another good rule is to set a reasonable word count for yourself as your daily goal. I said, “reasonable.” Forget 3,000. Forget 1,000. I think 500 words is reasonable. That’s about the same as a page a day, and it’s very manageable. On a good writing day, I suspect you will be able to write that much in fifteen minutes. You will then feel energized and able to lay aside your writing to feel you accomplished something for the day, or you can keep going while the muse inspires you. On other days, you will find 500 words an onerous task and can count yourself lucky if you get to 300 words in two sittings. Since Microsoft Word allows us to see the word count, even watch it increase as we type-I’m at about 970 words in this essay now-we have an advantage that allows us to break down our goal to the very word. Frankly, I find it fun to look every few seconds or minutes to see what my word count is-I just broke 1,010 words.

Now, the thing to remember is that it doesn’t matter how good those words are. The thing is to get them down on the page. Don’t bother counting the words in this essay because I’m going to go back and revise it, and when I do, the place where I said I had 970 might end up being around the 1,200 or the 700 word mark. You just never know what you will change once you revise, and it doesn’t matter at this point. What matters is that you get the words written. Filling that blank screen or that blank piece of paper is the hardest part of writing. Once that rough draft is done, the rest is all just tweaking. That’s when you might actually be able to measure time and determine that you can revise 4,000 words an hour or proofread 9,000 words an hour or what have you.

The point is to set a reasonable goal for each day, and also to set a reasonable time. If you have a full day and won’t be able to sit down until midnight on Monday, then it’s okay not to write that day, so long as your goal to write every day is compensated for on Tuesday. Maybe Tuesday you only have half an hour between work and supper to write, but in that half hour, you can do your 500 words, and then on Wednesday you have the whole evening so you decide to write 500 words before supper and then 500 at 10 p.m. after you watch your favorite TV show, and then your balance for the week is back on track.

You don’t need multiple hours and days of consecutive time. You do need to carve out small chunks of time, even if they are only fifteen minutes per day, and you need to set reasonable goals. Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t make your word count goal one day, but make it a goal that every day you will make your best attempt to spend a reasonable amount of time writing. If you can make that kind of a commitment, you most likely will have written an entire book within a year, and if you haven’t, then I daresay you’ll have a fair chunk of a rough draft, and in any case, you will be much farther than you were, and you need have no regrets in the end about how you never got around to writing that book.
