Experiencing Northern Michigan: Writers Up North Educating & Celebrating National Poetry Month

Many of us around Northern Michigan this week are experiencing a detour on our journey for warmer weather. Nevertheless, now that it’s April, I’m excited to honor National Poetry Month, inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996 as a way to increase the awareness and appreciation of poetry in the United States. The “largest literary celebration in the world, with schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers, and poets celebrating poetry’s vital place in our culture,” National Poetry Month is all about celebration, education, and stimulation through the vibrant art of poetry. As a poet living, working, and writing up north, I find there’s no place more meaningful than Northern Michigan in the spring and summertime for a writer to make art surrounded by the support of nature, community, and the camaraderie of other artists.

Poets’ Night Out is a Traverse City gathering of Northern Michigan poets whose original work is selected by judges for the annual event and anthology publication release at the City Opera House.
