Coming Up This Winter

We’re kicking off 2023 with in-person book talks, writing workshops and more! Whether you’re a book lover or aspiring author, we hope you join us for a fun literary experience.

How to Get Your Book Published
Tuesday, Jan. 31 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. ESTLearn everything you need to know about how to publish your book at this virtual workshop with Two Sisters Writing & Publishing. Since founding this independent press, Elizabeth Ann Atkins and Catherine M. Greenspan have published 36 memoirs, workbooks and novels in four years. This includes Catherine’s young adult novels and memoirs for former Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer, a former American Red Cross president, several physicians, and even their mother, a retired judge.

The Two Sisters will explain your three main options: traditional publishing with “The Big Five” in New York; self-publishing; and independent and hybrid publishing. Elizabeth will also share her experience as a bestselling author whose 40 books have been published all three ways. And you’ll learn how to reverse engineer the entire process to strategize your best possible outcome. You’ll leave this high-energy, informative and interactive virtual workshop armed with everything you need to know to choose the best publishing option for your book.Tickets:
General admission is $50.

Elizabeth is available for one-on-one coaching, and workshops attendees will receive 20% off a coaching session with her!

Writing Memoir When Memory Fails
Thursdays, Feb. 23 & March 2 from 7 – 9 p.m. ESTDo you have a burning story inside you that’s begging to get out? What to do when you feel the need to write what happened but your memory has a few (or many) gaps?

Join memoirist Diane Gottlieb in this two-part virtual seminar. We will examine the craft choices other authors have made to manage their fuzzy details and tell their truest stories, even in the face of uncertainty. We’ll read several flash pieces, essays and excerpts from book-length memoir, paying special attention to speculative elements (speculation with both a lowercase and capital “S”). We’ll also discuss the big question of how “accurate” or “true” a piece of writing must be to earn the classification of nonfiction. There will also be time for writing! Diane will offer prompts and opportunities for sharing. Tickets:
Early bird tickets are $80 until midnight on
Jan. 23, 2023.
General admission is $95.

A Latte to Write About: Creative Writing with Coffee
Saturday, April 1 from 4 – 5:30 p.m. ESTThere’s nothing better than good coffee to get you in a caffeinated creative writing spirit! Join us at Drifter Coffee in Ferndale for an interactive creative writing workshop themed all around coffee! Detroit Writing Room founder Stephanie Steinberg will guide you with writing prompts that explore writing with the five senses as you smell, taste — and yes — touch your coffee. We’ll practice writing from different perspectives. You’ll put your imagination to work and pretend you’re a coffee mug on your shelf. What would that mug say about you or your household? We’ll also pour into some of our favorite memories surrounding a good cup of coffee.

The workshop will take place inside Drifter Coffee’s greenhouse. Coffee and treats are included. Each participant will also receive a complimentary purple Detroit Writing Room journal ($15 value) and purple pen. But you’re welcome to bring your favorite writing utensils and coffee mug for inspiration!Space is limited!
