We’re kicking off 2023 with in-person book talks, writing workshops and more! Whether you’re a book lover or aspiring author, we hope you join us for a fun literary experience.
How to Get Your Book Published Tuesday, Jan. 31 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. ESTLearn everything you need to know about how to publish your book at this virtual workshop with Two Sisters Writing & Publishing. Since founding this independent press, Elizabeth Ann Atkins and Catherine M. Greenspan have published 36 memoirs, workbooks and novels in four years. This includes Catherine’s young adult novels and memoirs for former Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer, a former American Red Cross president, several physicians, and even their mother, a retired judge.
The Two Sisters will explain your three main options: traditional publishing with “The Big Five” in New York; self-publishing; and independent and hybrid publishing. Elizabeth will also share her experience as a bestselling author whose 40 books have been published all three ways. And you’ll learn how to reverse engineer the entire process to strategize your best possible outcome. You’ll leave this high-energy, informative and interactive virtual workshop armed with everything you need to know to choose the best publishing option for your book.Tickets: General admission is $50.
Elizabeth is available for one-on-one coaching, and workshops attendees will receive 20% off a coaching session with her! Visit detroitwritingroom.com/coaches.
Out-of-the-Box Branding Ideas Thursday, Feb. 16 from 6 – 7:15 p.m. ESTBuilding a brand is hard for an author, and most of us don’t know where to start. Detroit author Sylvia Hubbard has published over 55 books in two decades.
In this virtual workshop, she’ll cover author platform must-haves on websites and social media, book collaboration ideas, unique branding tips and more. She will share information for beginners, and also help advanced authors not give up and discover more opportunities. Participants will receive digital resources with links. The last 15 minutes will be reserved for Q&A. Come ready to learn to earn and actually have fun doing it!Tickets: General admission is $45.
Writing Memoir When Memory Fails Thursdays, Feb. 23 & March 2 from 7 – 9 p.m. ESTDo you have a burning story inside you that’s begging to get out? What to do when you feel the need to write what happened but your memory has a few (or many) gaps?
Join memoirist Diane Gottlieb in this two-part virtual seminar. We will examine the craft choices other authors have made to manage their fuzzy details and tell their truest stories, even in the face of uncertainty. We’ll read several flash pieces, essays and excerpts from book-length memoir, paying special attention to speculative elements (speculation with both a lowercase and capital “S”). We’ll also discuss the big question of how “accurate” or “true” a piece of writing must be to earn the classification of nonfiction. There will also be time for writing! Diane will offer prompts and opportunities for sharing. Tickets: Early bird tickets are $80 until midnight on Jan. 23, 2023. General admission is $95.
A Latte to Write About: Creative Writing with Coffee Saturday, April 1 from 4 – 5:30 p.m. ESTThere’s nothing better than good coffee to get you in a caffeinated creative writing spirit! Join us at Drifter Coffee in Ferndale for an interactive creative writing workshop themed all around coffee! Detroit Writing Room founder Stephanie Steinberg will guide you with writing prompts that explore writing with the five senses as you smell, taste — and yes — touch your coffee. We’ll practice writing from different perspectives. You’ll put your imagination to work and pretend you’re a coffee mug on your shelf. What would that mug say about you or your household? We’ll also pour into some of our favorite memories surrounding a good cup of coffee.
The workshop will take place inside Drifter Coffee’s greenhouse. Coffee and treats are included. Each participant will also receive a complimentary purple Detroit Writing Room journal ($15 value) and purple pen. But you’re welcome to bring your favorite writing utensils and coffee mug for inspiration!Space is limited!
Tickets: Early bird tickets are $50 until Feb. 1, 2023. General admission is $60.

Authors should sell their stories on their website to engage with their readers, build trust, and reach a wider audience. By having a website, authors can give readers an insight into their story, their writing process, and what inspired them. They can also use the website to share exclusive content and updates, provide links to where their book can be purchased, and even promote their upcoming events. By establishing a platform to share their stories, authors can create a personal connection with their readers and build a community of loyal followers. Check out this video from one of our second Saturday meetups for more information on the process.

Why you should network and learn with other authors and writers
Networking with other writers is a great way to learn from their experiences, get advice on your own writing, and stay motivated. It can also help you make connections that can lead to new opportunities and collaborations. Networking with other writers can also help you stay up to date on the latest industry trends and techniques, and provide you with a support system if you ever feel stuck or overwhelmed. Finally, it can be a great way to make new friends in the writing community who share your interests and passions.

Stories have the ability to move us, teach us, and bring out our emotions. A story can bring people together and help them to find common ground. It can also be used as an educational tool to learn about different cultures and customs. For businesses, storytelling instead of listing facts and figures, can be a powerful marketing opportunity.
Your challenge today: think about how you will use the power of storytelling to make a difference in your or someone else’s life this week. The possibilities for how we use stories are endless – so let’s take some time to explore their power!

IN THE DAYS OF NOAH, IN AN ANCIENT WORLD OF ANXIETY …
Noah warned the world about the coming flood yet, outside of his family, no one listened. Ancient prophecies, signs, and omens pointed to coming worldwide disaster—yet no one listened. Signs in the environment and society provided humanity with another set of warnings—yet no one listened!

Battling ever-growing economic woes, scoffing masses, the duplicity of her benefactor, a growing threat of all-out war with totalitarian Lemuria, and resistance from…
