Greetings Sisters and Brothers,
I would like for you to participate in a poll for me. This should only take a few seconds.
We are trying to determine if we will have a holiday celebration this year.
Let’s say we’d have a set up like this:
Sunday, December 15, 2013
2:00 pm – 7:00 pm
At Trippple BBB’s Bar & Grille
24200 Grand River Ave at Telegraph Road
Detroit, Michigan 48219
We would have Dinner, Dessert & Dancing with a cash bar.
Would you please take the time to tell us if you’d like to join the
National Writers Union Southeast Michigan Chapter’s Holiday Celebration.
You may RSVP at: aleciatoiwrites@gmail.com. We will need to know a head count by Wednesday, December 11, 2013.
Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Alecia Goodlow-Young,
Chair of SE MI NWU
Starting now until forever, it will be our mission to try to collect 100, 000 books for the Metro Detroit Literary Community every year.
I know the impact of books in a home for a child and I want to give every home that doesn’t have books in Detroit some.
This sounds like an interesting challenge and I’m asking everyone to help me.

We’ve got an amazing new location for tomorrow’s big event: storytelling and song with the Rust Belt Rising crew is hitting Trinosophes TOMORROW, Wednesday, June 25, 7-9pm. Free, and awesome. See you there!
Call it good old-fashioned Midwestern storytelling… with a kick.
Nic Esposito of The Head & The Hand Press is hitting the road with Philadelphia musician Todd Henkin from the band The Great Unknown for a series of performance-based storytelling and song showcasing the fascinating stories collected in The Rust Belt Rising Almanac. When this a-typical book talk comes to Detroit, we’re spotlighting Marissa Johnson-Valenzuela’s story on adapting to Detroit through the community in collective housing, as well as a micro-fiction piece about Hitsville, USA, and art inspired by recycled objects from Detroit artist Cindy LaFerle.
The Head & The Hand Press, a craft publisher in Philadelphia, is bringing this show to the city with the support of Literary Detroit.
The Rust Belt Rising Almanac is a collection of snapshots and stories from writers and artists in America’s Rust Belt Cities: escapes, remains, and models of growth. You’ll learn about projects that are working & the people who aren’t, find a road map for wandering, and green your thumb with an industrial soil-strength planting guide. The almanac may not serve strictly as a meteorological or agricultural guide, but it will help to measure the kind of atmospheric pressure felt between jobs, between communities, between the friends who are still here and the ones not so lucky, bound together by a common question: what’s next for the rust belt?
We are cultivating Detroit as a distinctive literary city with extraordinary public events that connect readers with writers.

March is International Women’s Month and there’s is no better time to support, celebrate and appreciate the women in your life in Detroit, while raising money to support our local domestic violence organizations in Metro Detroit.
The Vagina Monologues introduces a wildly divergent gathering of female voices written by Obie Award winning author, Eve Ensler.
“Ensler breaks taboos by talking, talking and talking some more—stripping fear and shame from what she celebrates here. It makes for quite a party. Funny, outrageous, emotionally affecting, and occasionally angry…The Vagina Monologues confront words to demystify and disarm them. In so doing, Ensler disarms the audience too.”

Every year V-Day invites activists in colleges, communities, high schools, or youth groups around the world to present select benefit events during and leading up to V-Season (February 1–April 30). The purpose of these events is to raise awareness about violence against women and girls as well as raise money (100% of the proceeds must be donated) for local beneficiaries that are working to end violence. No theater or producing experience is necessary and no royalty fees are charged.
At The International Institute (111 E. Kirby btwn John R & Woodward) in Detroit, Shawn P Entertainment Presents Vagina Monologues 2013 Sunday, March 24, 2013.

ABOUT S.A.F.E.
Kalyn Risker, Founder and Executive Director of Sisters Acquiring Financial Empowerment (SAFE) is a survivor of domestic violence. In 1998, she was beaten until her eye socket required reconstructive surgery. Kalyn Risker immediately left the situation with her four-year-old daughter, having only a part-time job and needing additional income and health benefits. Prior to her doctor releasing her back to work, she received a full-time position at a payroll company and began building her career. While working full-time, Ms. Risker obtained a Bachelors Business Administration in Human Resource Management. As a Human Resource Manager, she received job applications from women who were missing many of the necessary components to seek employment. Kalyn Risker also supervised many employees that lacked adequate resumes for successful career advancement. Additionally, she met with several workers seeking her department to explain reductions in their productivity, request time off work and other resources to help deal with abuse in their homes. As stated by Kalyn Risker “My experience as a survivor of domestic violence and as a Human Resource Executive led to the idea for SAFE. Although I show no readily visible signs of scarring, I use my personal victory over circumstances to help inspire others into action”.
Sisters Acquiring Financial Empowerment (SAFE) has an accomplished background of actively providing services to survivors of domestic violence in the Southeastern Michigan community since its first Executive Board meeting held May 11, 2006. SAFE has expanded its impact to the community by enlisting volunteers who are experts in the area of the training delivered. SAFE is a part of several anti-violence initiatives within Southeastern Michigan including, Wayne County Council Against Family Violence and Transformation Detroit. SAFE has also participated in rallies and community outreach initiatives to raise the awareness of domestic violence in the Southeastern Michigan community. Sisters Acquiring Financial Empowerment was granted its 501 (c) (3) nonprofit status effective August 8, 2006.
